Sustaining Trust Trust is based on individual experiences with the family or business. A business family creates trust when it works together to plan or problem solve around tough issues. Fairly developing family rules and then applying them consistently to all family members builds trust. Each family member knows what to expect from his or her interactions with the family and business. Trust is a special form of business capital that is a critical to all organizational relationships. 6 The difficulty in building and maintaining trust can make it a unique competitive advantage for family firms.

The Reardon Family Challenge demonstrates many of the issues that make the PPP valuable to family firms. The Reardon Family Challenge is introduced here to provide the reader with a case example to think about as the planning process develops. The Reardon family’s issues will be explored in each chapter resulting in the development of a Family Enterprise Continuity Plan and a Business Strategy Plan (see Appendices E and G). REARDON FAMILY CHALLENGE The Reardon Technology Case Bob and Steve Reardon are frustrated with their siblings’ behavior.

The Business Strategy Plan considers the internal and external environments, the firm’s Strategic Potential (Chapter 7) and which strategies best match with the firm’s Strategic Potential (Chapter 8). As the strategic decision process continues there should now probably be only a few possible strategic alternatives under consideration. It is possible that all these alternatives would support the first two screens for the Vision and Strategic Fits. However, the third screen ensures that the final strategy best fits the family.
